# Tillered > Network performance software that accelerates TCP traffic across long-distance and high-latency links. Tillered optimises network performance at the TCP layer, requiring no application changes. It segments long-distance paths and applies automated congestion control tuning to maximise throughput. Available as a fully managed cloud service or a self-hosted deployment for air-gapped and restricted environments. ## What Tillered Does Tillered delivers faster transfers, higher throughput, and more stable connections over long-distance links through purpose-built transport optimisation. It operates at OSI Layer 4 (TCP/transport) and addresses the problem of TCP throughput collapse over long distances. Non-TCP IP traffic is carried between nodes via IP tunnels so all routed traffic follows the same path, but only TCP is optimised. Tillered addresses TCP throughput collapse by: - **TCP Session Segmentation:** Shorter segments between nodes keep congestion windows efficient. - **Dual Transport Modes:** TCP for high-throughput continuous transfers; UDP for bursty, latency-sensitive workloads. - **Automated Path Management:** Automatic setup and configuration of segmented paths across distributed networks. - **Adaptive QoS:** Traffic prioritisation that responds to changing network conditions. - **Continuous Measurement:** Real-time latency, loss, and throughput observation to inform routing and tuning. Tillered works transparently beneath applications with no code changes. It uses policy-based routing on firewalls, so if a node goes down, traffic falls back to the standard path with zero disruption. ## What Tillered Is Not - **Not a VPN or tunnel.** Tillered does not encrypt or encapsulate traffic for privacy purposes. It optimises TCP transport performance. - **Not a CDN or caching layer.** It does not store or serve content. It accelerates the transfer of data in motion. - **Not an application-layer proxy.** Tillered never inspects or modifies application payloads.
